A 21-year-old woman is facing criminal charges in Beltrami County after her four children were left in a sweltering car in a Target parking lot. A criminal complaint states Bianca Hazelrigg went shopping for swimsuits while the children were left in the car Saturday, June 9. The outside temperature was 88 degrees at the time. Police responded to a call around 5:20 p.m. from a concerned individual about four young children left unattended. When police arrived on the scene, they found three children, two 2 year olds and a 4 year old, strapped into their car seats and 7 year old playing outside the car in the parking lot. The vehicle was not running and all of the windows were closed, according to the complaint. The children in the vehicle were “very hot to the touch and were flushed and sweating”, court documents state. Around 5:40 p.m., Hazelrigg returned from shopping and said that it was not a big deal to leave her children in the car because she was only gone for a few minutes. Surveillance video shows Hazelrigg was in the store for about 30 minutes. Hazelrigg’s children were taken into Social Services custody. If convicted, Hazelrigg could spend a maximum of one year in prison and a $3,000 fine.
