Backus MN Death Investigation/Officer Involved Shooting

Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch reports that on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at 1:38 PM, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an intruder at a residence in Backus. Information from the residence was that a shot had been fired. Deputies responded to the area and were encountered on a residential street by an armed adult male. The male approached deputies with a firearm and was fatally shot by a deputy.  An adult male was also located deceased inside the residence. Autopsies are scheduled with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office. The investigation is ongoing.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Pine River Police Department, Pequot Lakes Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol.

There is no threat to public safety at this time.  The names of the officers will be released after initial interviews are completed; these officers are currently on paid Administrative Leave.  Future media inquiries should be directed to the BCA.
