Even thou is was a rainy, dreary day....that didn't dampen the fun and spirits of those in attendance at the KK Radio Network Summer Fun time Giveaway on Saturday! The happiest person of all was Robert Demmon of Nevis, MN who went home with a Lund Boat, Mercury Outboard and shore-lander trailer compliments of Vaughn Auto and Marine of New York Mills. Robert qualified as a potential winner on-site this summer at the Hubbard County Fair. He is a huge listener of KDKK 97.5 FM one of 7 stations in the KK Radio Network group that were participating in the giveaway all summer long. Others in attendance had a chance to win a slug of great additional prizes too and enjoy a free lunch. Food provided by Coborn's Grocery in Park Rapids. Thank you to all who participated, showed up and "hung-out" in the rain, listen to our stations, attend the events we were at this summer. We couldn't do this without our major sponsors which included: Vaughn Auto and Marine in New York Mills providing us the boat, motor and trailer. KLN Family Brands, ACME Tools and Smokey Hills Outdoor Store, and GOICEFISH.com. And of course thank you to Smokey Hills for hosting the event at their beautiful location in Park Rapids and the A-Team staff of the KK Radio Network who worked hard to put the event on. See you next year and Congrats Robert!
On Thursday, August 24th the KK Radio Network went out to Evergreen Fun Park to try and escape one of there Escape Rooms. The event was placed as a way to show the community how fun the new Escape Rooms are in Park Rapids. The room that was used was based on one of the old bunkers found underground in New York. The bunker itself was used by Franklin Roosevelt during World War 2. Trying to escape took almost 40 minutes and there were many steps that had to be taken in order to try and escape. Another room that was available was based on an Old West jail that had you as the outlaw. For those looking for a great time and exciting action, look no further than Evergreen Fun Park!
Sunday August 20th, the Firefly Event Barn partnered with a Beer-Bourbon-Bacon Fest organization. The weather was perfect, the craft beers and distilled beverages flowed freely and the crowd enjoyed awesome music by Steel River Band. It was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon with people and staff for the KK Radio Network, and relax on the patio of the Taproom or tear up the grass dancing to the band. Owners for the Firefly Event Barn hope to build on the event themselves next year and make it bigger and better. This summer has found the owers trying new things to expand the fun that take place on the ground of this quaint an beautiful facility. Besides holding 25 wedding this season, a Taproom was openig this summer featuring 12 craft beers on tap, signature drinks and some light meals. Thursday nights it's OPen Mic night, Friday's bring your date for date night and Sundays relax and chill before the work week begins. The Taproom is closed most Saturdays due to weddings. Check them out on Facebook for all the fun and different things they keep trying with many other fun events coming next year.
Moondance Jam Number 26 played to all demographics this summer! The weather was great with the exception of one good storm that rolled through on Friday night, but the hardworking crew got things back on track with not one act being cancelled. Another epic moment thou was made at Moondance when Black Stone Cherry did a repeat of the Moondance Sammy Haager performance on the regional stage so that all acts were able to be seen by jammers. The Saloon was packed and Black Stone Cherry rocked it. Moondance is evolving like all festivals need too. Built strictly on Classic Rock 26 years ago, the slow move to include younger bands has been taking place for the past few years. The good old classic rockers of Vince Neil of Motley Crew, Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, Great White, Peter Frampton and Steve Miller band put on great shows. Gracing the stage for the first time was Melissa Etheridge. WOW! A talented, great musician and one heck of a guitar player. Halestorm was back again and didn't disappoint with their high energy. Lzzy pulled off a beautiful piano set where she sang the day lights out of "The Rose" and other beautiful songs. Her brother tore up the drum set. Excitement everywhere. Then the newer, younger bands performed including Pretty Reckless, LIVE, Better than Ezra. The dark horse of the week....Dorothy! Not only is she a amazing singer, performer and everyone fell in love with her. Backstage crew was ranting on how sweet, kind and easy she was to work with. Kathy Bieloh announced from the stage that she has added 4 new partners and see great things to come for Moondance. As the partners best said, "Moondance is not broken, it just hasn't reached it's full potential yet." Moondance 27th will be bringing some great new changes and bigger bands. Stay tuned!
It was another great year of fun at Moondance Jammin Country. Great artists crossed the stage including Thomas Rhett making his third appearance. Old Dominion put on an amazing show as their career is finally kicking into high gear with hit after hit. Dan and Shay put on an amazing show and were so much fun. Danielle Bradberry wowed the youngin's. Back visiting again with his low smooth true country tone was William Micheal Morgan. We heard from up and coming artists like Drew Baldridge, Parmalee plus more. Weather wise it was chilly...but the fun never stopped. Kathy Bieloh the owner and operator of both Moondance Jam and Moondance Jammin Country announced from the stage Saturday night that she has 4 new partners who will be joining her. The partners bring financial stability, an abundance of set skills that will only enhance Moondance more. Expect bigger things in the future. As the partners have been quoted saying; "Moondance isn't broke, it just hasn't reached it's full potential." Excited for 2018!!!

The sound of chainsaws, fresh aroma of sawdust, and pine filled the air on Beach Haven and Pine Haven road on the south west end of Long Lake outside of Park Rapids. Neighbors along the area were helping each other clear trees that fell every direction. Most snapped but some even appeared twisted according to a person who clears trees for a living. Individuals from Illinois didn't get the EAS alert as they don't have a weather radio. A new utility she'd had a tree uprooted is still leaning on the shed trying to figure out how they are going to remove this massive tree. Most damage appeared to be to deciduous trees where the wind probably got caught up in the foliage and snapped them right off onto anything that lay below including houses, cabins, boats and cars. Utilities were still put clearing trees to open roads u late this afternoon and trees still laid over power lines in some spots. With the ground being so saturated from all the rain, trees are being uprooted. Comments coming from people this summer...it's become a full-time job clearing trees after all the storms this year.
The Leech Lake Walleye Tournament was held this past weekend on Leech Lake. 150 boats headed out on Leech Lake for the 2 day tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The Heartland 106 Race was a huge success and ran 2 days on Fishhook Lake located north of Park Rapids.
Even thou old man winter was no where to be seen, several weekends ago cold weather secured the opportunity for the Heartland 106 Race to take place. Heartland 106 is one of 8 races in the USXC Circuit and the last two years with the lack of snow have proved to make things challenging. This race originally scheduled for Jan 16-17th was forced to be rescheduled to end of January with the hopes that we would get cold to make ice or better yet a pile of snow to make it a Cross-Country race.
Well, the cold came and gave us plenty of ice, but no snow was to be seen. The race was forced to be held on Fishhook Lake in Park Rapids for the 2nd year. It was a beautiful weekend with temperatures in upper 30's and plenty of sunshine. Racers and spectators alike enjoy the weekend. Congrats to all the winners and local young racers Ean Voigt and Brandon Wolter who had a great weekend of racing. Voigt ended up winning several classes.
Just announced this week, the I-500 from Winnepeg to Willmar has also been cancelled due to the lack of snow.
Enjoying a visit by Mandy Klinefelter whose family owns 12 McDonalds here up north including Park Rapids. Thanks for my pumpkin spice latte and breakfast which is now served all day!
Congratulations to Miriam Mursu of New York Mills, she won the kk Radio Network Summer Fun-time giveaway today. She took home a beautiful Lund boat powered by Mercury and trailer. Thank you to Vaughn Auto and Marine, kln Family Brands, Smokey Hills Outdoor Store, Orton's Convenience Stores and 1st National Bank of Henning, Ottertail and Battle Lake our major sponsors this year. Hundreds of people braved the mist, wind and rain and enjoyed the 2 hour event hoping it was their name that was called. Pre-qualifiers and their families along with visitors to Smokey Hills that day received free lunch of hotdogs from Coborns Grocery along with products from kln Family Brands. Thank you Northwoods Bank for the Cups and napkins. And a big shout out to Smokey Hills Outdoor store and their staff for being so accommodating during the event.
Moondance Jam was epic this year and memory making for many reasons: Monsoon rains, Sammy Hagar on Saloon stage, 4 generations of bands performing! Thursday brought 4 inches of rain in a couple of hours chasing bands of the main stage and closing it down. Papa Roach never made their appearance even thou there was a lot of work behind the scene to try and make it happen. But Sammy Hagar jumped in with both feet and said I want to play the MDJ Saloon which can hold about 500 people and another 1000 or so standing outside of it. It was epic. Caribbean style close up and personal, just like as if you were in Cabo Wabo! Those who stayed on site and gathered into the various bars were treated with quite the surprise when he jumped on stage. The rest of the week went great with things drying up quickly, sunshine returning and all bands getting on stage. mDoobies, Huey Lewis, Finger 11, Peter Frampton and Shinedown just to name a few. It was a great Jam!
It was great week of fun for the 9th MDJC in Walker. 14,000 people attended the Friday night show that was headlined by Florida Georgia Line. From New artists that are true country-William Micheal Murphy, to the big names-Thomas Rhett, Phil Vassar and Chris Young......concert goers enjoyed great entertainment and weather all 3 days!

Severe weather rolled through Northern Minnesota Thursday late afternoon. A tornado warning for area's around Northern Cass County all the way to Aitkin County went into affect about 5:30pm and the storm continued to trek across the state delayng the Nevis vs Floodwood Football game in Floodwood. Lightening was dancing around and players were moved inside the school for safety until the storm passed. The game that was scheduled to begin at 7:00pm and finally was able to resume just before 9pm. The tornado was first spotted near Bena and treked towards the Hill City area before spotters reported that it had disapated. This great photo was taken by Shannon Northbird. Nevis lost to Floodwood 27-20 in their first regular season game of the season. We have heard no reports of serious damage as the tornado spent most of it's time on the ground in open area's.

Classes ranged from pro's, to Juniors, woman and vintage sled races. The staging area was located on Hwy 34 East of Park Rapids at the old Silver Star City location. Racers exceeded 60-70 mph going down ditches to 100 mph across Long Lake. The average MPH was 64-67 MPH throughout the course on Saturday. The town was a buzz all weekend long and many people worked hard to make this race come alive after the green light was given. The group had one week to put it all together and it was a huge success!
